Bauchi Governor Defends Tax Reform Comments
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed has reaffirmed his stance on President Bola Tinubu’s proposed tax reforms, dismissing any threats from the Presidency. Speaking on Channels Television’s Year-End Review, Mohammed stated that he stands by his comments and they are not meant to malign or insult but to express genuine concerns.
The governor, who chairs the PDP Governors’ Forum, criticized the tax bills as skewed and warned of their detrimental effects on sub-national economies. He urged the Presidency to avoid arrogance, listen to stakeholders, and address mistrust surrounding the legislation.
The Presidency had earlier labeled his comments as inflammatory, asking for a retraction, but Mohammed remains resolute, arguing that reforms should not impoverish states or favor specific regions. He and 18 northern governors have rejected the reforms, even as President Tinubu insists they are necessary for economic growth.
