Don urges community, police partnership to protect school students

The Head of Department of Psychology, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (NAU), Awka, Anambra state, Professor Chidozie Nwafor has urged partnership between security agencies and host communities for protection of schools against criminal incisions.

Nwafor, who made the call in a lecture entitled “Security Agencies and Community Partnership in Safeguarding Nigerian Schools” at day two training workshop organised by the Anambra state police command for operatives of Schools Protection Squad (SPS), noted that quality education could not be impacted in atmosphere of chaos, fear or absence of peace.

He commended the Inspector-general of police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun for setting up the special security team for the protection of schools across the country, adding that the impact would extend to communities and society at large

 

In another development

Social-advocacy group, Gender Mobile Initiative, has applauded the House of Representatives for passing the Anti-Sexual Harassment in Tertiary Educational Institutions Bill, saying it is a significant step toward ensuring safe and conducive learning environments across Nigeria.

The bill was passed by the lawmakers on Wednesday.
The Bill was enacted to promote and protect ethical standards in tertiary education, protect students against sexual harassment by educators in tertiary educational institutions, and redressal of complaints of sexual harassment of students by educators in tertiary educational institutions.

Gender Mobile said the Sexual Harassment Bill mandated strict standards of accountability, defined clear protections for students, and established Independent Sexual Harassment Prohibition Committees to address complaints promptly and fairly.
